How the Maine estimate works
Enter gross pay for one pay period, federal W-4 adjustments, and the state details shown above. Federal withholding follows Publication 15-T. Maine annualizes the paycheck, subtracts $5,300 for each Form W-4ME allowance and the official 2026 standard deduction, applies the Single or Married percentage schedule, and rounds the annualized and pay-period results as directed by Maine Revenue Services. Form W-4ME additional withholding is added afterward. Maine PFML is a separate employee deduction on covered wages up to the Social Security wage base.
Example: The official Maine example uses $1,000 of weekly wages, Single status, and two allowances. Annual wages of $52,000 are reduced by $10,600 of allowances and the $12,450 withholding standard deduction. The annual tax rounds to $1,694 and the weekly result rounds to $33. The calculator does not assume any unentered benefit deduction or invent a tax result.
Weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, and monthly are the supported paycheck frequencies. “Annual salary” is an earnings input and the annual view is a simple period multiplication; neither is an annual payroll-period method. The special Form W-4 adjustment for nonresident aliens is not modeled.
How does Maine paycheck withholding work? Maine uses a separate Form W-4ME and rounds the percentage-method result to the nearest whole dollar. The Paid Family and Medical Leave employee premium is calculated separately and can continue even when a valid income-tax withholding exemption is on file.
